The Beginning Years: The prehistory of North Carolina spans over to over 5,000 year ago, during which native cultures developed and changed, evident in artifacts like arrowheads and pottery. Archaeologists use terms like PaleoIndian, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian to discuss cultural periods. The PaleoIndian period saw cooler and wetter climates with spruce-pine parklands. The Archaic period had stone projectile points and stone tools with various settlements. The Woodland period introduced the bow and arrow and pottery, along with agriculture practices. Settlements during this time included villages with wood houses. The Mississippian period continued similar practices with new ceramic designs, temple mounds, and political centers. Mississippian groups were mainly in the southern and western parts of the state. Both Woodland and Mississippian cultures often had villages with defensive structures like stockades. The climate and vegetation varied throughout these periods, affecting the lifestyles and artifacts of the native cultures in present-day North Carolina.
More History: North Carolina has a diverse history that dates back to early human inhabitants over 10,000 years ago, followed by Native American tribes like the Cherokee. British colonization attempts in the 1580s failed, but in 1729, it became a British crown colony with New Bern as its capital. North Carolina was an early supporter of independence from Britain and became the 12th state in the Union after the American Revolution. During the Civil War, North Carolina seceded from the Union but surrendered in 1865, rejoining in 1868. The Wright brothers made history in 1903 by flying the first airplane in Kitty Hawk, marking the state’s shift to modernization. With over 150,000 artifacts at the North Carolina Museum of History and 27 state historic sites, the state’s rich history is well preserved and ready for exploration.

Climate of North Carolina: North Carolina has a climate is known for its humid subtropical climate with regional temperature differences. Severe storms are rare, but hurricanes can occur along the coast and tornadoes inland. The mountains shield the Piedmont and Coastal Plain from Midwest storms. The growing season ranges from 275 days on the coast to 175 in the mountains. Annual temperatures range from 66°F in the east, 60°F in the central region, to 55°F in the mountains. The wettest months are July and August, with yearly precipitation ranging from 46 to 54 inches on the coast, 44 to 50 inches in the Piedmont, and 40 to 80 inches in the mountains. Approximately 222 days per year are sunny, about 61% of days being sunny.
More About North Carolina: Throughout the years, North Carolina has earned the titles of the home of flying, whereby Wilbur and Orville Wright traveled to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, following four years of scientific experimentation, they accomplished the first successful airplane flights on December 17, 1903. North Carolina is also the home state of Mayberry, USA, a fictional town on The Andy Griffith Show that aired on CBS from 1960-1968, created by Sheldon Leonard. It is greatly known for the Appalachian Trail in Great Smoky Mountains, the Gilded Age home design of Biltmore, and for the Battleship.
