The Beginning Years: It is believed that Virginia boasts a rich ancient history, with signs of human habitation that stretch back at least 5,000 years or more. By around 1,200 B.C., various tribes had formed, thanks to the Eastern Woodland hunter-gatherers who thrived in the region. On May 13, 1607, the Virginia Company of London established Jamestown, marking the first enduring English settlement in Virginia. This venture was led by a group of colonists, featuring notable figures such as Captain John Smith, Captain Christopher Newport, and George Percy. The settlement was named Jamestown to pay tribute to King James I. The fortunes of the colony took a turn for the better when tobacco emerged as a lucrative crop, leading to a situation by 1615 where nearly every resident of Jamestown was cultivating it.

More History: The state of Virginia proclaimed its independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution, Virginians were pivotal in the fight for independence, and on June 25, 1788, the state became the tenth to ratify the U.S. Constitution. In 1779, the capital transitioned from Williamsburg to Richmond. Virginia’s planters significantly influenced the rise of Democratic-Republican principles and were instrumental in the creation of the Bill of Rights. The plantation economy thrived on the labor of enslaved Africans and land taken from displaced Indigenous tribes.
