The Beginning Years: It is believed that the initial occupation of Maryland was with the Paleo-Indians, that arrived in Maryland over 5,000 years ago to hunt mammoths, bison, and caribou. By 1000 B.C., over 8,000 Native Americans from 40 tribes lived in the area. In the 1500s, Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano discovered Maryland, while Captain John Smith from England arrived in 1608. The first English settlement, a fur-trading post, was established on Kent Island in 1631. Maryland became a colony under King Charles I, with George Calvert granted land north of Virginia. Calvert’s son, Cecilus, settled the colony named “Terra Maria” or “Maryland” after Queen Henrietta Maria. The colony was mainly Roman Catholic and promoted religious tolerance through the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649.

More History: The state of Maryland started in the Union with Annapolis being the U.S. capital in 1783-1784, when the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolution. Francis Scott Key wrote “The Star-Spangled Banner” after witnessing the War of 1812 attack on Fort McHenry. Maryland, a slave state, was home to notable abolitionists like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Tubman was born into slavery in Dorchester County, escaped, and returned to help others gain freedom. Douglass, born in Talbot County, escaped slavery and became a famous abolitionist. Maryland faced divisions during the Civil War, mainly supporting the Union. The state’s history includes significant contributions to America’s development, including agriculture and fishing industries. The east has a humid subtropical climate influenced by the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean, moderating the weather. Winters see ice on northern tributaries, while summers can reach 107°F with high humidity. Maryland averages approximately 202 sunny days per year with 55% of days being sunny.
