Tom Skilling Retires on Wednesday After Almost 46 Years of Weather Forecasting

February 28, 2024. This will be the last day the WGN-TV in Chicago studios will be barren from to-be retired Tom Skilling since August 13, 1978! Good luck Tom in celebrating your retirement!

A Tom Skilling’s career has gone through the years with many milestones. I knew him well and watched his forecasts throughout the period. When the massive and devastating F5 tornado hit Plainfield, Illinois in August 1990, Tom really caught my eye at his candid and cativating knowledge and expertise in preparing his forecasts, as he exercised empathy and fondness in bringing not only the details, but I could feel the vibe straight through the television.

I heard throughout the years of his sponsoring of the Annual Fermilab Tornado and Severe Storm Weather Seminar. I had the great opportunity to meet Mr. Skilling on Saturday, April 20, 2007 at the Fermilab, Batavia, Illinois annual seminar in that year. Tom mis such a great and outstanding guy. . .laid back and a very professional speaker, even in person.

More recent events included the great Groundhog Day blizzard in 2011, and has continued to be extremely proficient and very accurate at every day of forecasting to this day. I remember being on lunch in the 2000’s and not being able to wait to see his forecast every day, and go back to work as soon as he was done with his forecast on WGN-TV (Chicago’s Very Own) Noon News. Tom will be very much missed, and I wish him the best regards in his celebration of retirement and also great luck on his move to Hawaii.
