A Brief History:
U.S. Origination: The first official Groundhog Day celebration took place in 1887 in Punxsutawney as presented by Clymer Freas, the son of a local newspaper editor. U.S. Legend states that if Phil, the groundhog, sees his shadow–it is a sign that the next six weeks will bring wintry weather. The holiday is not recognized as a U.S. holiday or in any state, but only in some U.S. and Canada cities.

European Legend: An annual event that has its origin in a Dutch legend about a furry rodent, with roots back to Candlemas Day in Europe, coinciding with the Christian “festival of lights” falling on Feb. 2, the midway point between the start and end of winter. Legend is similar, but with different twists, but the goal is the same. Will the next six weeks will bring wintry weather?

Superstition: It derives from an Old Pennsylvania Dutch superstition: “When the groundhog emerges from its burrow on Groundhog Day and sees its shadow, winter will persist six more weeks. If, however, the groundhog sees no shadow, it will be an early spring”.

Significance: The prediction of the arrival of spring.

Celebrated: The United States and Canada, plus some European countries celebrate the legend of the Groundhog Day–All on February 2nd.

Even a Movie: The movie “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray released in the year 1993 concerning the great groundhog and the day dedicated.

A Few Facts:

The Present:
Celebration comes every year. This year Punxsutawney Phil came out and seen the shadow has predicted six more weeks of winter. Here, in Illinois, we haven’t had much snow, but it has been cold the past few days, but a very warm winter lest the terrible record cold Christmas. So–I hope for an early spring, at least here. The truth either comes true or. . .?

The Future:
Groundhog Day will continue to go on in the years to come. . .
