Happening Today:
After last year’s “against all odds” win with the horse, Rich Strike “Epicenter”, today we are welcoming the 149th Kentucky Derby at 5:57 pm. CDT today, 5/6/23 at Churchill Downs, near Louisville, KY.

A Brief History:
Founded By: Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark.

How:  Colonel Clark formed the Louisville Jockey Club plus acquiring land for racetrack from his uncles John & Henry Churchill.

Where: Churchill Downs, Kentucky.

When: 1874.

First Official Kentucky Derby: May 17, 1875.

  • The Kentucky Derby, traditionally held on the first Saturday in May, is one of the most well known Grade 1 Thoroughbred stakes races in the world.
  • First run in 1875, this 1 1/4-mile (10 furlongs) race kicks off the American Triple Crown of horse racing.
  • Last year’s winner was Rich Strike, a prick with 80-1 odds, and a vast payout of $4,101.20 on a $2 bet in an exacta.

No restrictions or delays announced, and 150,000-175,000, although the maximum has been 170,513 people, all in full attendance! Post time is 5:57 p.m. CDST. Hopefully it goes smooth and no problems. Things could get interesting today at Churchill Downs, where the winners in 2019 and 2021 were disqualified. Last year the horse had a miraculous against the odds win! Good luck to everyone and all the horses!

My hope is to have it go forever, continuing now and on the first Saturday in May to continue the tradition. . .
