Happy Weather Observers Day!

Yesterday was National Weather Observers Day. A day to honor the people who enjoy watching and observing the weather.  It could be you, someone in your family, a friend, a co-worker, etc. Hats off to all weather observers. . .

Happy Weather Observers Day ! !

☀️ ☂️ 🌅 🌄 🌪️ ☁️ 🌁 ⛅ 🌀 ❄️ ☀️ ☂️ 🌅 🌄 🌪️ ☁️ 🌁 ⛅ 🌀 ❄️

A Brief History:
Origination: The day is to honor  and respect all observers nationwide. These are people with valuable resources who even assist the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Some are hobbyists and some bocome storm spotters. Some go on to get merits an even certificates to comply with safety issues, and just to be great!

Not Just the Observer, But Also the Instruments:  We also honor all these:

  • Weather phenomena
  • History of weather tracking
  • Meteorological instruments
  • Internet
  • Farmers’ almanacs

Weather Phenomena: Weather phenomena include the types of weather, but also subcategories. These include:

  • Thunderstorms:
    • Lighning
  • Tornadoes:
    • Clouds
    • Strong wind
    • Rain
    • Hail
  • Hurricanes or cyclones:
    • Strong wind
    • Heavy rain
  • Blizzards:
    • Heavy snow
    • Ice
    • Cold temperatures
  • Dust storms:
    • Strong winds
    • Arid conditions
  • Floods:
    • Heavy rainfall
  • Hail storms
  • Cold or warm temperatures
  • Rain
  • Ice
  • Ice storms:
    • freezing rain

History of Weather Tracking: Before modern weather tracking, people relied on the local weather observer. The Old Farmer’s Almanac started on day one with their famous weather forecasts, with their secret formula that was devised by the founder, Robert B. Thomas, in 1792, when George Washington was president. During the early and mid-1800’s, weather observation networks began to grow and expand across the United States. The first daily newspaper weather report was published on August 31, 1848 in the Daily News in London. On August 1, 1861, the first daily weather forecasts were published in the Meteorological Reports in The Times. Then in 1869, telegraph service, instituted in Cincinnati, began collecting weather data and producing weather charts, hence the beginnings of National Weather Service (NWS). In the 20th century, advances in understanding atmospheric physics led towards modern-day numerical weather prediction. Since then, forecasting techniques have included analysing data relating to pressure, air speed, precipitation and temperature. Nowadays, with the higher speeds of computers and the computer age, the methods and great skills at mofern forecasting are better and more accurate than ever.

Meteorological Instruments: Here is a list (not all) of examples of classic meteorological instruments that their uses are used on an ongoing and daily basis:

  • Barometers:
    • Fortin’s Barometers
    • Aneroid Barometers
  • Thermometers:
    • Wet and Dry Bulb Thermometers
  • Wind Vanes
  • Anemometers
  • Rain-Gauges

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .

Meteorological Instruments: Weather is barely ever trivial, although there are a lot of quiz style meterials online.

The Present:
We are very lucky to live in the day and age we do in this comuter age. Better safety and way more accurate forecasting assists people, communters, people in business, scheduling for work-home–sports, and better living! Our thanks still go out to the observer, no matter which type. Kudos for a great hobby of lifelong destiny!

The Future:
Forecasting and the people who bring it to us, have my gratitude today, and way into the years to come. .
