What It Means to Have Firefighters Available: It is imperative not to take for granite even for a minute how unsafe the modern world would be without the local firefighter available for immediate dispatch. These are professional people who dedicate their lives and risk life in order to provide safety for people involved in not only fires, but safety, emergency situations and emergency medical technicians (EMT).

Importance of Firefighter: Modern living depends on the personnel of our local firefighters. Without having 9-1-1 and the ability to have a local firefighter dispatched in the timely method that these prefessional do to provide safety, we could not live life as we do. Emergencies happen on a whim, everyday. Even though results that happen are not as intended or need for professional assistance in an emergency, without the local firefighter, we would not be able to have the assurance of a life living in the modern world. With the provision of having the local firefighter there, we can sleep nights. The wildfire situation without a firefighter would be drastically more devestating. Also, these individuals sometimes go into high crime areas to protect families and property from burning to the ground and spreading to even more areas, houses and businesses.

A Brief History:
Origination: The day was introduces worldwide to celebrate the local firefighter around the globe for their dedication, service and sacrifice that they provide for society. A Catholic tradition recognizes the date as a feast day for St. Florian, who was in the day a patron saint to firefighters, chimney sweeps, brewers in those days. The cross of Saint Florian remains to this day the common mark among firefighters and all of the dedicated organizations that support all firefighters.

A Ribbon to Symbolize the Firefighter: An internationally recognized ribbon reflecting the symbolic colors of the elements firefighters and emergency service workers – red for fire, blue for water.

First Week in May is the Time to Participate: Many events are planned all week sponsored by local emergency services providers that include memorial services, open houses, parades, and motorcycle runs, all to celebrate the local firefighter.

First Sunday of May to Pay Respect: This Sunday at noon local time is the time to pay respect for all those firefighters that were lost lost in the line of duty or passed on before us. Fire sirens sound for 30 seconds followed by a minute of silence to pay tribute in memoriam.

Celebrated: Since 1999, May 4th every year!

  1. You celebrate a lot of “holidays”. Like Mother’s Day and Firemen Day ( They should get a month or longer. Nurses Day, etc. They are heroes 🦸‍♀️ Without them there would be a lot less people here to celebrate! Thanks for sharing!
