Was WV The First Western State:
The Beginning Years: It is thought that the first inhabitants of West Virginia descended from eastern Asians, having crossed the Bering Strait from Siberia to Alaska approximately 40,000 years ago. In the 17^th century, when the settlers occupied the state as it was before statehood as the complete state of Virginia, including the West Virginia Portion.

More History: The state of Virginia voted to secede from the United States during the Civil War during the years of 1861 to 1865. When the people of west-northwestern Appalachian region of the state opposed that decision of secession, they organized in order to form their own state, calling it West Virginia. The newly formed support of a new state enlisted with the Union side of the Civil War. The newly formed state still carries all of the original history of the original Virginia, adding the latter years to its history.

The Haven of West Virginia: West Virginia is a mountainous region, with a portion of the Appalachians running right through the heart of the state of West Virginia. A lot of trails, woodlands, hills and valleys, mountains, and nature. How beautiful the great state of West Virginia is!

Climate of West Virginia: The climate of West Virginia is characterized by its moderately cold winters, and also by its warm and humid summers. In the winter months, the jet stream, becomes located near or over the Northeast region during winter months, bringing with it frequent storm systems. Average temperatures range from about 56 °F in the south to 52 °F in the north and 48 °F in the most mountainous regions, with winter lows are often below freezing and sometimes drop below 10°F, and in summer around 85°F in the southwest, near the Ohio River area, to less than 80°F in the east-central mountains.

• 1698 – Williamsburg becomes the capital of the original Virginia
• 1748 – George Washington surveyed land in West Virginia
• 1861 – When Virginia secedes from the Union at the start of the Civil War, West Virginia remains loyal to the Union and creates its own government separate from Virginia
• 1862 – The Battle of Shepherdstown is fought
• 1863 – West Virginia breaks away from Virginia and is admitted as the 35^th state
• 1875 – The state capital is moved to Wheeling
• 1880 – The Hatfields and McCoys begin to feud
• 1885 – Charleston becomes the permanent state capital
• 1971 – John Denver comes out with the hit song Take Me Home, Country Roads (in West Virginia)
• 1977 – The New River Gorge Bridge opens
