…A lot of times we lose our disposition in regular daily matters, but this country and the flag it stands behind, is still the most free land in the world. It is a nice day to celebrate the freedom we enjoy everyday with a tributary to that served. Where else in the world do we have that freedom to express our own opinions, and get away with having those thoughts, but in the U.S.A.–and that freedom is only possible through our amazing Veterans. Do not take this for granted and take your hats off today for the Veterans!!!

Wishing everyone who has served the armed forces, their families, or those who know somebody…they deserve to attention and dedication in exchange for those years of dedication to protect the security of this free country and the flag that stands for. Remember ALL this Veterans Day in 2022, which was known as Armistice Day before World War II. All the days and nights, and the legacy lives on and on. . .

A Brief History:
Origination: Veterans Day was originally “Armistice Day”, and originated on November 11, 1919, which was the first anniversary of the end of then War of the Worlds or World War I. Congress passed a 1926 resolution for annual observance, and then in 1938, November 11 became a national holiday every year.

Evolution: Veterans Day is a day to express gratitude towards America’s service members, both past and present, and for those who have or had served in both war and peace periods, and especially veterans of any and all wars. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the legal holiday from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day”. In 1968, when the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed by Congress, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October. In 1953, Alvin J. King from Emporia, Kansas, a cobbler who had lost his nephew during World War II, petitioned the city to rename the holiday in order to honor all who had served. That year, the city moved the celebration date of Veterans Day on November 11. I even remembered it being in October when I was young. Then finally, in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned the holiday to its original November 11th date, due to the significance in marking the the end of the Vietnam war and to restore all the original significance.

Traditions: Taking a hat off for the many Americans who over the years have served our Armed Forces in any way, shape or form. Also celebrating the holiday by visiting cemeteries or memorials, and holding family gatherings–especially in the evening, and participating and attending parades and vigils in honor. In my city every year in Aurora, Illinois it is celebrated at West Aurora High School with a field displaying multiple flags.

Other Trivia: Veterans Day has countless events, tributes and other forms of celebration–for all Veterans: both living and remembered, every year!

Between Holidays: The holiday is in between, but closer to Halloween than Thanksgiving.

A Few Facts:
I am sharing a few facts, and more, some trivia, some not trivial. . .

• There are around 9 million veterans in the U.S. over the age of 65.
  
• There were around 21.8 million veterans in the U.S. as of 2010.
  
• Around 1.6 million U.S. veterans are women.
• Veterans Day is NOT the Same as Memorial Day!

The Future:
We will NEVER, ever forget those who served in the name of the freedom for which the flag and the Statue of Liberty stands for!
