Happy World Meteorological Day!

Today is World Meteorological Day! It is the day to honor the the science of meteorology worldwide. The study of meteorology has roots that go back centuries in time, and the dramatic improvement thanks to computer science, has shaped the study and implementation of meteorology to be not only possible–but a field that makes the necessary things in life a possibility. Life, safety and employment opportunities due to just being able to know what Mother Nature has in store are available to us all–due to the science of meteorology. . .

Happy World Meteorological Day ! !

A Brief History:
Origination: Meteorology is the science of the study of the atmosphere, including atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics. Meteorology is of daily interest for the interim and a study for thousands of years. Even though it has always been acknowledged, it was not until 18th century science that a significant progress had been made in the field of meteorology. Nowadays because of the implementation of computer science, and the launching of satellites in the mid-20th century, that accuracy in weather prediction made a dramatic improvement. Because of the use of computers, forecasting is not limited to use of items such as historical data, almanacs and astrology.

The Weatherman and Meteorology: For years, people complain that the weatherman isn’t always making the right prediction. Nowadays however, with the thanks of major advances in science and technology, meteorologists are now more accurate than they ever had been being. Nowadays, the accuracy for a 24-hour period forecast is at or about with 95% accuracy. Accuracies still rate at about 75% for a 5-day forecast, making the computer age’s version of meteorology in a better place. Thanks to accurate weather information from real-time information, meteorologists can give people a forecast that can give warning of dangerous storms and disaster, thus saving countless lives. Some people still complain that “The weatherman is never right”. Despite the adage, thanks to the advance in science, technology and better forecasting–meteorologists are more accurate than ever before.

Organizations That Make It Possible: In the United States, the national and local National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), make forecasting a possibility, with all the generation of raw data and models that give the tools of the trade in meteorology. On an international level, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which is an agency of the United Nations, with a new theme “Early Warning and Early Action” has available tools to track weather, climate and environment. These organizations gather bring the tools together of having the raw weather data, by analyzing the data, studying the numerical computer models, and thereby issuing both weather and river forecasts plus warnings in order to protect life and property. Specialized marine and aviation forecasts help assist and enhance economic possibility. Spotters forecast helping assist firefighters be able to control wildfires and make emergency management officials ability to contain hazardous chemical spills all possible. Finally, extensive climate records help assist the operation of engineers, architects, researchers, insurance companies and utilities. All these tools make forecasting a possibility on international, national and local levels.

Media: Weather media in most of the world, including the United States includes coverage of weather and weather forecasting by the following methods:

Why Today is the Celebration: The day to celebrate World Meteorological Day was determined in 1961 because every year, on this day, the World Meteorological Organization releases annual information regarding the world’s climate. WMO chose this day because it was the day in 1950 that the WMO was formed originally.WMO‘s mission is to educate public on the important happenings in the science of meteorology such as global warming or climate change, and the frequency and intensity of natural disaster due to weather. Some previous year’s WMO themes included:

  • 2021: The ocean, our climate, and weather
  • 2020: Climate and water
  • 2019: The Sun, the Earth, and the weather
  • 2018: Weather-ready, climate-smart
  • 2017: Understanding clouds

Celebrated: Celebrated internationally every March 23rd, every year!

The Present:
The present day forecasting, with the tools and persons invloved, make this the safest are, given that attention is paid to the forecasting. There has never been a time where we have the opportunity to be able to have a forecast pronto, like we do in this day and age. And my gratitude goes out and we can all thank our local weatherman for all they do to predict the weather and keep us safe!

The Future:
Forecasting and the people who bring it to us, have my gratitude today Our children and even we need to learn more about meteorology to make sure we stay on top–now and way into the years to come. .
