Here is the final “Featured Photos” of the fourth segment of architecture photos, The Skies of Chicago, Illinois – An Aerial View–and today’s featured photo: a night north view from the John Hancock Observatory–Northern Near North Side, Lincoln Park & Lake Michigan & Oak Street Beach, North Avenue Beach, and Montrose Beach all at night through a green filter. All year long in 2021 and this month, I have been featuring fine photos of architecture in differing stances, divided into four parts–Part 1 – Churches, Part 2 – Vintage Architecture, Part 3 – The Buildings of Chicago, Illinois, and now I am wrapping up Part 4. To continue to honor the brighter side of life, in a few months, I will resume with Part 5, a great theme To Be Announced! This nighttime photo from the great John Hancock observatory was taken from the north side of the building out into the night skies, using a soft green filter, The green filter is used primarily for shooting in black and white, but in this case, it was used in order to give the photo some finesse. The sodium lights of those 1980’s is not only warm in color tint, it has a lasting orange effect that was cut, so when the green filter was used, it blocked the radiation so that the blackness of the outer range of field construed as a black hue. The photo was purposely underexposed by one-third of an f-stop, so that it was noticeable, yet yielded great results giving the photo that nice blackness, yet the lights in the city, including Lake Shore Drive, came out vivid and with distinction. It is photos like these that make the City of Chicago a one of the most enchanting cities in the world–and a photo from the Observatory up atop of the John Hancock is a primary visitor’s haven for people to go while on vacation. It is among many–yet very unique examples of the great staples throughout the City of Chicago. This makes the great city of Chicago it’s very own, and a great place to any day of the year, but those summer nights really rock! Date – July 1981.
Photo taken with a tripod mounted Nikon FE camera through a Nikon 50 mm lens, filter=Green, Aperture=1.4 f/stop, shutter-speed 4 seconds, loaded with Konica Color Slide Film ISO (ASA) 100 (fine grain) processed with E-6 using Kodak Ektachrome Chemicals. Enlargement processed Type R color positive paper and R-3000 chemistry onto 3½x5″ glossy negative color image enlargement paper. Date – July 1981.
This is the final fine aerial view photograph in the series feature of Part 4 – The Skies of Chicago, Illinois. Due to popular demand, there will be a future architecture series coming very soon, in order to continue to bring back to the nice spirit of celebrating great and fine architecture! A montage of the Part 4 segment will follow!
